Since its enactment in 1996, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) has prevented same-sex couples whose marriages were recognized by their home state from receiving the hundreds of benefits available to other married couples under federal law. A historic day for equal rights, today the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against DOMA’s federal ban on gay marriage.
Today the Supreme Court also dismissed California’s Prop 8 appeal, which means same-sex marriages can resume in the Golden State.
Love is love, no matter where it comes from or who it’s given to. Love is beautiful in all shapes, sizes, colors and genders. Today, we celebrate these sentiments with a collection of photos revealing the emotions gay rights supporters experienced upon learning about the Supreme Court’s rulings.
Here they are, the pictures that tell us so much about the struggle for freedom, equality and the triumph of love.
Buzzing with joy, we cheer.
Tears and laughter express our relief.
Hugs and applause all around.
Radiant with gratitude, we reflect.
We feel like victors of a battle, hard won.
Washed by waves of emotion, we stand strong and united.
We are giddy with this moment’s bliss.
Together, we celebrate.
Together, we toast to love.
